Falcons Battle Back in Fast-Paced Thriller but Fall Short to Contra Costa, 78–72

In a game defined by swings, speed, and relentless intensity, Folsom Lake men's basketball traded blows with Contra Costa for 40 minutes before ultimately coming up short, 78–72, on Saturday afternoon at Falcon Gymnasium.

Both teams built — and lost — double-digit leads in a contest that felt like two games in one. Contra Costa opened hot, using transition pressure and downhill attacking to jump ahead early. Folsom Lake responded in the second half with a 10-point surge of their own, fueled by defensive stops and aggressive play at the rim. But in the closing minutes, the Comets found just enough offense to hold off a late Falcon push.

Second-Half Surge Sparks Life

Down 38–28 at halftime, the Falcons played with renewed fire after the break. The pace ramped up dramatically, and Folsom Lake thrived in chaos — turning rebounds and turnovers into quick buckets. They outscored the Comets 44–40 in the second half and tied the game multiple times, but couldn't quite wrestle the lead back for good.

Freshman guard Jalen Newhouse was the driving force behind the comeback. He attacked the rim relentlessly, finishing with 20 points and an impressive 12-of-13 performance at the free-throw line. Every time Folsom Lake needed a momentum swing, Newhouse delivered pressure.

Inside Presence and Bench Boost

Forward Dylan Sayer gave FLC consistent interior scoring with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Moses Oginni anchored the paint, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds to go with 7 points. His physical presence helped Folsom Lake win second-chance opportunities and control long stretches of the second half.

Off the bench, Jordan Sayer provided a critical spark with 12 points, hitting 2 threes and staying perfect at the free-throw line. His energy kept FLC within striking distance during a crucial mid-game run.

What Held the Falcons Back

Turnovers — 25 of them — were the storyline Folsom Lake wishes they could rewrite. Although the Falcons shot a solid 46.3% from the field, the giveaways limited their ability to maintain control, especially early. Despite battling back, the miscues proved costly in a game where both teams were running the floor nonstop.

Defensively, the Falcons generated 7 steals and 3 blocks, but Contra Costa's timely shot-making in the final minutes kept the Comets narrowly ahead.

A Gritty Effort with Takeaways Moving Forward

Despite the loss, Folsom Lake showed resilience, depth, and an ability to adjust the tempo in their favor. Overcoming a 10-point deficit and creating one of their own demonstrated the team's competitiveness heading into the upcoming slate.

The Falcons fall to 1–3, but the growth is clear — especially in the second-half execution and intensity.

If they can pair that energy with more consistent ball security, Folsom Lake will be in position to flip games like this one into future victories.
